Taking preventative measures for both vaginal and oral yeast infections is the best. However, when the infection is already in place and you have already had the diagnosis confirmed with your physician, there are natural home remedies that can be used to alleviate and even speed the recovery of the infection. Make sure that you consult your physician before trying these home remedies, especially if you are pregnant.
Let's begin with home remedies for oral thrush. These items can be found in your local grocery store if not already in your home.
Baking Soda - brush your teeth after every meal with baking soda. Just get your toothbrush wet and sprinkle with the baking soda. Rinse with ½ cup warm water mixed with 1-tablespoon hydrogen peroxide. Replace your toothbrush after the infection is gone.
Garlic - garlic has anti-fungal properties, so eating two fresh cloves of garlic daily, by itself or mixed in salad or sauces, will not only help prevent yeast infection, but can help with a current thrust infection.
Plain Yogurt - eating plain yogurt with active cultures also helps restore the imbalance that causes thrush.
Rinse with water - Especially for infants, give a ½ oz of cooled, boiled water after each feeding to rinse the milk from the mouth. Milk has natural sugars that yeast loves to feed on. Older children and adults should also make sure to rinse their mouths after each meal for the same reason.
Basil Tea - Boil 3 ½ cups of water, remove from heat and add 1¼-tsp. ground basil. Cover and steep for 30 minutes. When cooled, use as a gargle or sweeten to taste with maple syrup and drink 1 cup twice daily.
Saltwater gargle - gargle with a mixture of ½ cup warm water and ½ teaspoon salt; this will promote healing.
Now lets turn our attention to home remedies for a vaginal yeast infection.
Yogurt - though eating yogurt can help, an even better way to use yogurt for vaginal yeast infection is as follows. Purchase plain yogurt. Make sure that there are no added sugars or flavorings. It must also state that it has active cultures. Dip a tampon in the yogurt and insert into the vagina. Leave for at least an hour or two. This can be done before bed and left all night as well. This puts the active cultures directly in the area that needs the balance restored.
Apple cider Douche - Use 1 tablespoon of apple cider per 1 quart of water. Adding some garlic will also help reduce the itching.
Cranberry Juice - Drinking cranberry juice may introduce enough acid into the vaginal secretions to help fight the infection.
Rosemary Tea - You can use Rosemary Teas as a douche or you can rub it on externally to help relieve itching and irritation.
Whether it’s an oral or a vaginal yeast infection there is a home remedy to try. Remember to consult your physician, especially if you are pregnant and also if you have not been previously diagnosed with a yeast infection.
