- A white discharge that resembles cottage cheese
- Pain during intercourse
- Swelling of the vulva
- Foul odor

Yeast infections are so common that 75% of women will have at least one yeast infection in their lifetime and half will have more then one. It is important to have an official diagnosis of yeast infection with the first occurrence.

There is a wide array of treatment for vaginal yeast infection. With the first occurrence of vaginal yeast infection, a doctor should be consulted so that a diagnosis can be confirmed. The doctor will probably prescribe a prescription strength anti-fungal medication. This medication may be an oral medication, or a suppository. Or it may be a combination of the two.

For those suffering from recurring vaginal yeast infections, there are over the counter anti-fungal medications that can be used. When using a home treatment, it is important to complete the course of treatment as directed on the package and it may require a second round of treatment to completely get rid of the infection. If the infection persists, you should call the doctor.

Boric acid is another option for those that suffer from recurring vaginal yeast infection. A suppository is made from boric acid and should be used one to two times daily. It usually only takes one to two weeks to clear the infection, but boric acid can be irritating to the vagina and the vulva.

Home remedies also exist for treatment of vaginal yeast infection. Plain yogurt without any sugar or flavorings added can be eaten or used as an internal remedy. By dipping a tampon in the yogurt and inserting it into the vagina puts the active cultures from the yogurt directly where the imbalance is. The yogurt kills the fungi that have caused the imbalance. The yogurt also soothes the itching and irritation associated with the yeast infection.

An apple cider douche is also known to be successful in treating vaginal yeast infection. To use, you simply mix 1-tablespoon apple cider per 1 quart of water. By adding some garlic, you can also control the itching related to the yeast infection.

It is important to have an initial vaginal yeast infection diagnosed by a physician. If you are pregnant, you should also seek the advice of a physician for treatment.

To help keep yeast infection from coming back, try the following:

- Wear cotton underwear and loose cotton clothing
- Make sure the vaginal area is dried off well after bathing, showers or swimming. Using a hair dryer set on cool might help with this.
- Always wipe yourself from front to the back
- Shower immediately after swimming, change out of damp clothing immediately
- Don’t use colored or perfumed toilet paper
- Eat yogurt
- Limit sugar
- Get plenty of rest and drink plenty of water

Tough yeast infections are not a threat to pregnancy but it is important to take all the steps to help prevent it from occurring. If a yeast infection does occur, then it is important to consult your physician right away so treatment can begin immediately. The earlier you catch the infection, the easier it is to get rid of it. By following the preventive measures described above, you stand a better chance of not having a yeast infection during your pregnancy.
